Often, we consider cryotherapy as a post-training routine to help with pain and inflammation in our body. While with traditional cryotherapy and cold compression this may be true, what is not talked about is topical cryotherapy.
Topical cryotherapy products can be effective for both, before and after training. Ingredients, such as menthol, activate receptors known as TRPM8 and this induces the cooling sensation associated with menthol. The body reacts to this sensation by increasing blood flow to the site of activation, which can be helpful prior to training.
So while users may feel the “cold,” their body is actually “warming” up with the increased blood flow that can help with oxygenation and prime the body for an effective workout! Additionally, topical cryotherapy is also effective post-workout as it not only helps with pain and soreness, but with the increased blood flow can increase absorption of other anti-inflammatory ingredients.
